The mural paintings of Shantiniketan
A Documentary film by Debabrata Roy
24th April , 2008
Birla Academy of Art & Culture auditorium .
Duration 42 minutes
Synopsis
The modern Indian tradition of murals and open- air sculptures received its first major impetus from the efforts of masters like Nandalal Bose, Benodebehari Mukherjee and Ramkinkar Baij at Shantiniketan. They experimented with different forms and techniques and created along with their students at Kala Bhavan a large body of environmental works that decorate classrooms, hostels and the campus.
The film is all about this with an emphasis on the works of Nandalal Bose and Benodebahari Mukherjee. Also K.G. Subramanyan who is eminently continues this tradition is also shown in this film.
The tradition of environmental art that began at Shantiniketan in the second decade of last century continues to evolve through the works of its teachers and students. Many of these, especially the early works, have an assured place in the history of modern Indian art.
