She was born as Surjit Kaur in the small town of Tarn Taran After obtaining a Diploma in Commercial Art, her father was posted to Moscow and the family moved to the Russian capital. There she studied oil painting under Prof. V.N. Oreshnikov from 1977 to 1985 at the prestigious Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.She held her first solo exhibition in St. Petersburg (Moscow) in 1985, and again in New Delhi in 1986 and 1989. In the last twenty years, Akre Surjit has exhibited her work in most of the prestigious art galleries, holding several solo shows and has participated in many major group exhibitions in India and abroad. She was awarded President of India’s Silver Plaque in 1990.
