Buddha

Buddha

Artist: Unknown
Title: Buddha

The image of the Buddha is seen here standing on an ornamental pedestal. Of his two badly mutilated hands, the right hand was probably in abhaya mudra while his left hand is seen holding the end piece of his samghati.Attaired in three piece cloth (trichivara), the Buddha stands with his two foot kept apart. He wears a heavy scarf (samghati) and the deeply incised parallel ridges indicate the heavy folds of the drapery. His two shoulders are covered. There is a severely plain circular halo behind his head like the Greek god Helios. Buddha’s head is covered with curly hairs and in the middle of his head, there is a tuft of hair tied with a fillet. A small ‘urna’ appears between his eyebrows. His upper lids in the eyes are comparatively heavier than the lower ones.
